The Silver Birch is discreet in its size, but its cracked white bark is instantly recognizable. Its young pendulous branches bear small warts. Its leaves are triangular, glabrous, having teeth marked at the tip of the secondary veins. The flowers are grouped in catkins, but separated, the males in fine hanging catkins, the females in catkins first erect, then hanging when the fruits are ripe. The Silver Birch likes light siliceous soils, therefore rather acidic, even very poor, thanks to a mycorrhizal symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing bacteria of the Frankia genus. Eager for light, it is a pioneer on degraded land or on scorched land. Elegant in appearance with its silvery white bark and light branches, it rather inspires femininity. Everything is brilliance and delicacy, wood and bark can be handled with flexibility. The qualities of its depurative sap have long been recognized and it is very often associated with rites or purifying practices such as the festival of Imbolc (February 1 in Ireland).
