Breastfeeding or bottle feeding is always a special moment for parents. I myself took great pleasure in giving my nieces a bottle. On the other hand, I was a little distraught when they started to cry once they had gone back to bed, even though they seemed very peaceful a few minutes before. My sisters reassured me, it happened to them frequently, it was just reflux. I then thought of lemon balm hydrosol, which they tested and immediately adopted!
My tip
For reflux and colic in babies, lemon balm hydrosol works wonders. It can be given to toddlers at a rate of one milliliter per dose (up to 3 ml, the equivalent of half a teaspoon, in a one-year-old child), ideally before the bottle or breastfeeding. The hydrosol is then diluted in a little water or milk.
I also recommend using lemon balm hydrosol applied to the baby’s stomach. To do this, simply lay him on his back, pour the equivalent of a teaspoon of hydrosol into the palm of your hand and massage the little one's belly. As the hydrosol, which is aqueous, does not really massage, it is sometimes more pleasant to add a few drops of a vegetable oil (sweet almond for example) which makes the massage easier.
On the go or at home, lemon balm hydrosol will also be perfect on a washable cotton pad to wash your little one's face and clean their butt.
What does herbal medicine say?
Lemon balm is traditionally indicated for digestive disorders, minor sleep disorders and states of nervousness in children and adults. It acts on both the central nervous system and the digestive system. Sedative, analgesic and antispasmodic effects have been demonstrated in animals.
Lemon balm hydrosol mainly contains antispasmodic, calming, sedative and anti-inflammatory molecules. It acts as a calming agent in cases of stress, anxiety, nervous fatigue, insomnia, hypertension of nervous origin, in hyperactive children. It also calms digestive spasms in cases of reflux, colitis, stomach cramps, indigestion. It is a hydrosol perfectly suited also in cosmetics, for oily skin and mature skin, as well as for skin irritations, itching, eczema, diaper rash in infants.

The use of lemon balm hydrosol presents no contraindications or precautions for use at recommended doses, whether for external or internal use, even in a newborn. It is recommended for pregnant women prone to vomiting, at a rate of 1 to 2 teaspoons in a glass of water, before meals.

Lemon balm is a perennial, very honey-producing plant, which can reach 60 to 80 cm in height, with oval, dark green leaves and giving off a strong lemony smell when crushed. Cultivated since Antiquity as a medicinal plant, its aerial parts were recommended for digestive disorders and melancholy. In 1661, the Carmelites produced “melissa water”, reputed to be antispasmodic. Melissa essential oil is present in very small quantities in the plant, which makes it rare and precious. Hydrosol, very versatile and with interesting properties, is a perfect alternative, very pleasant to use internally and externally.
