Hawthorn bud

The plant

Hawthorn bud
Latin: Crataegus monogyna

Botanical Family : Rosaceae

Other names : Epine blanche, Epine de Mai, Aubépine à un style, Noble Epine, Cenellier

Plant part: Bud

Origin: France

Close to us, as a pioneer tree, the hawthorn, whose gray branches bear long thorns, colonizes hedges and forest edges throughout Europe, North Africa and Asia Minor. She particularly likes light. A true tree or shrub with a grayish trunk, it has a great longevity (greater than 500 years). She occupies the space left to her, she knows how to find her place and invites us to do the same.

Its small, deciduous, simple leaves are deeply divided into 3 to 7 toothed lobes. Its delicate and abundant white flowers which bloom from April to May symbolize purity and beauty and are associated with the Virgin Mary. In September, they give way to cenelles, small edible red fruits with stones, rather bland and floury but rich in vitamin C. They are a delight for birds.

Christian tradition associates hawthorn with Christ. In fact, she wants her crown of thorns to be woven with the branches, and for the drops of her blood to dye the stamens of the flowers...

Strength and beauty, love and thorns, delicacy and hardness of its wood, light and grayness do they not mark a balance in duality?

Very present in the Dordogne, the hawthorn offered itself to us both in the forest and along the roadsides, a great moment of picking.
