Rosehip Bud

The plant

Rosehip Bud
Latin: Rosa canina

Botanical Family : Rosaceae

Other names : Rosier sauvage, rosier des chiens (Rosa canina), rosier des bois

Plant part: Bud

Origin: France

How did Rosa canina, this climbing shrub (1 to 3m) certainly rustic but with such graceful and fragile white or pale pink flowers, and such a delicate fragrance, get the name dog rose? Although this ability has not been confirmed, a decoction of its root would have been able to cure rabies.

Unless we should see an analogy between its sharp and curved “thorns” and the fangs of the animal. Note also that the use of canina in botany can mean “with less value”…

For a botanist, this wild rose bush is not covered with thorns but rather with prickles. It is a natural host of our countryside, familiar with hedges and companion of brambles, blackthorns, hawthorns and dogwoods, it borders paths and forests. It particularly appreciates light and limestone, dry and warm soils but also grows on degraded or even uncultivated soils, both in plains and at altitude.

Discorides then Galen already described medicinal virtues. Fruits, flowers, petals and roots, each has its therapeutic properties.

We don't talk about the rosehip without mentioning its smooth and red "false fruit" in the shape of an olive pit, the rosehip or "scratcher" whose pulp is edible. Vitamins C and other vitamins, condensed tannins, flavonoids, mineral salts give this false fruit major properties to deal with winter ailments, tone the venous system and fight against inflammation. Ass-scratcher, the rustic side catches up again with this shrub, but this time this name comes from the scratching hair it contains.
