The transparent secretory pockets present on the limb of elongated leaves give the impression of multiple perforations, a particularity at the origin of the name of a thousandpertuis which means a thousand holes. Among all the species of St. John's Wort forming the hypericum genus, the name without epithet of a thousandpertuis generally designates the perforated St. John.
